Cheryl Dunye

Cheryl Dunye was born in 1966 in Liberia and studied in the USA at Temple University and at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. Notable among her films is The Watermelon Woman (1996), which won a Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival in 1996 and introduced her to the world as the first lesbian African-American director. Other critically acclaimed films were Stranger Inside (2001) and the comedy My Baby’s Daddy (2004). She currently teaches in the Cinema department at San Francisco State University. She is the mother of two children.
