William S. Burroughs: A Man Within

Documentary USA 2009

Novels such as Naked Lunch, The Wild Boys or Queer would be enough for us to consider William S. Burroughs one of the most innovative and outrageous intellectuals of the post WWII society, a source of inspiration for generations of artists. This documentary contains important archive footage, exclusive statements from eminent figures, including David Cronenberg, John Waters, Gus Van Sant, Allen Ginsberg, Patti Smith, Iggy Pop. In a visually striking presentation, Yony Leyser narrates the author's work, his decidedly unorthodox passions (drugs, alcohol and weapons) and the key episodes of his long life – from the discovery of his homosexuality to his travels through Latin America, Morocco and France, to the unintentional murder of his wife. Burroughs defined himself as a homosexual drug addict; he was considered the father of the Beat Generation because of his ability to portray contemporary reality from a disturbing and highly personal point of view - reality as seen through the eyes of the outcasts of society.
