Ri Chang Dui Hua (Small Talk)

Documentary Taiwan 2016

Anu is a middle-aged Taiwanese woman who is rather masculine looking. She has short hair and an enigmatic way of behaving: she doesn't talk much, especially not about herself. As was traditional in the 70's, she got married very young. She had two daughters with a violent man, whom she soon divorced, and then never married or had a man again. To make ends meet, she has always worked as a Taoist priestess, accompanying the souls of the dead in the afterlife, a job reserved for women. After years of questions without answers, director Hui-chen Huang, Anu's daughter, decides to talk on camerato her mother, overcoming that impenetrable wall of silence which has always marked their relationship: Anu's relationship with her female colleagues, whom she was sometimes friends with and sometimes attracted to, her loneliness, the situation of women in a conservative country, and her love for her daughters. Small Talk won the Teddy Award for Best Documentary Film in 2017.
