Renée

Documentary Canada 2011

In 1977, a transgender took part in the US Open tennis tournament for the first time, after winning a case against the United States Tennis Association which had excluded her from the tournament. Her name was Renée Richards. It was a revolutionary event. In 1986, Vanessa Redgrave had already told Renée's amazing story in the film Second Serve. Before her sex reassignment surgery, Renée grew up in a rich Jewish family in New York. She was a talented tennis player, a successful ophthalmologist, and a good husband and father. This film contains her memories and a series of personal accounts (including a contribution from Martina Navratilova). Renée emerges as a person in conflict with herself and her choices. We also see her difficult relationship with her son and her ex-wife, the problems caused by fame and the fact that it ends, and her inability to find love once she became a woman.
