Remembering the Man (Remembering the Man)

Documentary Australia 2015

Tim Conigrave and John Caleo met in 1976 when they were students at a prestigious Catholic school in Melbourne. It took them no time at all to fall madly in love, despite the incomprehension of their families and the people around them, and their love kept them together for sixteen years. A relationship fraught with jealousy, arguments and breakups. HIV puts an end to their life together, causing the deaths of Caleo, in 1992, and of Conigrave in 1994. Conigrave was able to tell their story in the autobiographical novel Holding the Man, published in 1995 after his death, a novel that inspired a play, a feature film, presented in the 2016 TGLFF competition, and this documentary. This is a moving and detailed docufiction, in which moments of historical re-enactment alternate with exclusive first person accounts like Conigrave's, who recounts their story in a videotape recorded just before his death.
