Not Quite The Taliban

Documentary Belgium Jordan 2008

The taboos (and hypocrisies) of the Arab world are: faith, individual liberties, violence against women and homosexuality. The director, who is Lebanese Palestinian, lives in Dubai and belongs to the westernized cultural élite of the country, he wonders about his condition as an Arab and as a homosexual, and  he comes out in front of the camera. During the extremely complicated making of the documentary (facing censorship, obstacles, tacit opposition and real physical dangers), it was continually edited and re-edited and so has taken on the claustrophobic form of a frustrating, frank and personal confession and, at the same time, of a passionate condemnation of the society. Futuristic landscapes and gleaming shopping centres, affluence and obscurantism, the testimonies of friends and relatives, of religious leaders and ordinary people. Including the director's mother who bravely sides with her son.
