Is What Was is an experimental documentary film essay. The film intercuts present day images of Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp, where gay men were tortured and murdered by the Nazis, with the vernacular photographs of Nazi soldiers that had been taken by their compatriots during the time of the Holocaust. The images of the graffiti on the remnants of the Berlin Wall, embody the concept of the “wall of history” that bears the mark of every Queer human life: a testament to those who “will to love.”
