Giorgio/Giorgia... storia di una voce (Giorgio/Giorgia...History of a Voice)

Documentary Italy 2008

Born in Palermo as Giorgio Montana, Georgia O’Brien possessed an exceptional vocal range which she exploited in various musical styles during the course of her career. While still in her teens, she began studying music before turning to lyric repertory and making her debut as variety entertainer in curtain raisers and vaudeville shows in theatres throughout Italy. Her European breakthrough came in the 1960s when she became known for playing double roles. Vittorio Caprioli created a piece based on Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries for her in which she interpreted both Brunhilde (soprano) and Wotan (bass). Following a sex change operation, in Casablanca, in 1970, she appeared in numerous films and musical and stage productions under the direction of Lerici, Gregoretti, Shamann, Poli, Patroni Griffi, and Chereau, among others.
