Cameroun: sortir du Nkuta

Documentary France 2009

In Cameroon, since 1972 homosexuality is officially, but in 2006 a list of fifty presumed (and influential) gay men was published, following the homophobic declarations of Reverend Yaoundè. If the word "homosexual" can be now openly said and used, still those who come out are harassed and violently repressed, due to traditions, religion and colonial legacy. How do you measure individual freedom in Cameroon? Is law actually respected? In this film, through the life stories of three homosexuals and a lawyer, Alice Nkom, who represents for free eleven gay men preventively arrested, directors Céline Metzger and Christelle Cordeau, withheld by local authorities during the shooting, ask themselves if civil rights are effectively guaranteed in the country. "Sortir du nkuta" (Out of nkuta) is the slang expression to indicate the coming out.
